When it comes to style versus substance in games, a healthy balance is best. It’s no good a game looking awesome but playing badly. Conversely a great game can be spoiled by bad presentation. In the case of Inkvaders, the scales are tipped in favour of style. This presents a few issues which prevent the game achieving greatness, at least for now – but it is still a good game in its current form. The design of this side-scrolling alien shoot-em-up is sensational.
The concept of the art style is that someone is in a lecture when the Martians they have doodled come to life on their notebook. To defend the planet a superhero is needed, so Generic Marine (known as G).gets drawn and the battle begins.

This leads to a comic book, sketched sort of style prevalent throughout the game. The cartoony graphics are vivid and vibrant, including our spaceman hero with brightly coloured blasts of his laser gun as he bobs along and the yellow aliens with their electricity-zapping hands. There are some nice embellishments to the presentation, such as the pages of the notepad being pulled back between levels.

When one finally comes down the pipes it’s difficult to not get overly excited. Multiplayer games are the best way to get the most bang for your buck because of added re-playability, so it’s really a shame that Uno has a great system set-up for multiplayer but the developers did a poor job on the technical side of things. The game isn’t a complete bust by any means. The single player and quick play modes each offer hours of entertainment without a hitch. The ability to customize each game fully to your liking is fantastic. Quick play offers exactly what you think. Fire up quick play whenever you have only a moment of downtime to get your Uno fix. Quick play has three levels of difficulty to choose from and that is it. It plays by the classic Uno rules that everyone knows and loves.

Customized mode offers tons of options to mix up the gameplay. You can change the scoring type from 250-5000 points to have the shortest or longest game possible. The draw settings can also be changed along with force play, 7-0, and jump in mode. The 7-0 can really throw the game for a loop. When a 7 or 0 card is played, players must exchange the cards that are in their hand with another player which can be quite irritating or a life saver, depending on which side of the coin you are on. The jump in setting allows players to jump in and play a card even if it isn’t their turn as long as it exactly matches the card the previously player put down. All of these options are great if you get bored of the classic game.

I would like to be quoted as saying that Alive 4-ever will be the first iPhone game to be made into a movie, and that it will, without a doubt in my mind, be directed by Uwe Boll. Boll will then go on to fight the critics of his poor movie in Vegas during a widely publicized “Raging Boll 3″. He will then certainly call at least 4 people, including Michael Bay and Eli Roth, “retards” in response to their accusations that Alive 4-ever is a total flop because of a pitiful script, poor acting, and no visual direction. This prophesy is by no means an indicator of a bad game, it just seems like Alive 4-ever is a perfect Uwe Boll disaster… erm… movie to take on.

Much like iDracula and Minigore before it, Alive 4-dead is a top down, two joystick shooter. The basic idea of every game in the genre is to walk around with the left joystick while using the right joystick to aim/fire. There is really nothing to the genre other than walking around shooting, but each game in the genre does give a certain amount of extra stuff to do in the meantime. Alive 4-ever is a bit different than the other top down shooters in that there are real levels, real objectives, and a pretty cool RPG element that allows you to choose between characters, upgrade your stats/guns, and use accessories.
Being an RPG, there is a minor story involved, one in which some pharmaceutical company made a drug of some sort that turned people into zombies. The government goes out and blows up the city, killing all but two people, Taza and Anna. As the story goes, the zombie infestation spreads and the government sends out Steve and Wallace, along with the two survivors, to wreck havoc on the zombie population… err… find out what happened. It all sounds very Resident Evil-ish to me, but I’m quite alright with that. Just give me something to kill.

Digital Worlds' recently released iPhone game Gold Keeper [App Store] could best be described as a survival shooter, even though technically you're not shooting anything. Similar to games like Minigore, iDracula, and all the others, in Gold Keeper you must survive as long as possible only this time instead of playing a human fighting off swarms of monsters, zombies, and demons, you play as a demon fighting off an endless supply of humans. Gold Keeper doesn't have any plot to speak of short of a vague description on the help screen, so you have to invent your own back story to the game. Personally, I'm not entirely sure that you're evil, even though you're a demon. The way I see it, you're a demon who decided to invest in gold. You're sitting in your cave counting your doubloons sipping an ice cold Zima when human looters decided to come steal your little demon spawn's inheritance. The human thieves intent on stealing your hard earned life savings refused to listen to reason, so you've got no choice but to slay them. It's all a matter of perspective.
